Southern Michif (Métis) Introductory Language Course

Southern Michif (Métis) Introductory Language Course

With Outdoor Learning School

Immerse yourself in Métis heritage with the Winter 2025 Southern Michif Language Course, a 6-week series of 90-minute online lessons led by experienced instructors. Learn the basics of Southern Michif, a traditional Métis language with roots in the Red River Valley, and explore the rich cultural practices that connect this language to the land.

The course, sponsored by Métis Nation British Columbia, is free for all Métis participants and non-Métis allies eager to support language revitalisation. Sessions are led by Marie Schoenthal, a fluent Michif speaker, and Amy Cross, a dedicated Métis cultural advocate.

Participants will receive access to class recordings and a Certificate of Attendance upon completion. This course is an opportunity to deepen your connection to Indigenous languages, foster cultural understanding, and take a meaningful step toward Truth and Reconciliation.

“If you are a non-Indigenous language learner, we invite you to review these reflections on what it means to be a non-Indigenous learner in an Indigenous language learning course.” - Outdoor Learning School
